QUESTION: What is the difference between CoolSculpting® and traditional liposuction? Is one procedure more effective than the other?

Dr. Kulick’s ANSWER: CoolSculpting® is a more recent non-invasive, non-surgical procedure used to selectively reduce fat layers in problem areas (e.g., abdomen, inner thighs and love handles). CoolSculpting® gently cools unwanted fat cells in the body, with the aim of inducing controlled elimination of fat cells. CoolSculpting®, is the concept of “cryolipolysis”, which is based on the principle that fat cells are more vulnerable to cooling than surrounding tissues. The result often requires multiple treatments to provide optimal improvement over a two to four month period. Such a protocol can result in a natural-looking improvement in coutour due to the reduction in fat.

Liposuction, on the other hand, is an invasive procedure. The technique involves an operating room, anesthesia and a board-certified plastic surgeon that has experience with this procedure. The surgeon makes incisions, allowing a canula to be inserted under the skin to break up and suck the fat from various parts of the body. Many surgeons will utilize ultrasound or a power assisted deivce during the procedure to target fat cells to maximize the efficacy of the procedure. This is a “one treatment” procedure, which can treat multiple areas. Fat will not deposit in the same treatment area as prior to surgery if one gains weight after surgery.

CoolSculpting vs traditional liposuction
